It was a blessing last weekend to hear from Pat Koh, who is such a faithful spiritual mother in the LifeSpring family. As you can probably tell, one of Pat’s many gifts is the ability to teach, as she showed in her message on biblical covenants.
In her message, Pat described the importance of three of the most important covenants in scripture. The Edenic covenant in Genesis 3:15 is about God’s covenant or promise to humanity of a Savior who will crush and defeat Satan. The Abrahamic covenant later in Genesis was a promise to make Abraham’s descendants into a great nation and to make them a blessing to the nations. The New covenant in Christ is about restoring our relationship with God.
As Pat shared, a few topics that she mentioned stood out to me. The first is something that she mentioned early in her message. There is a saying that when buying a house, the three things to look for are location, location, location. In the same way, when we think about covenant, what we should think about is relationship, relationship, relationship. I love that idea!
The purpose of God’s covenant was always to bring us into right relationship with Him. The beauty of this however is that God’s covenants are not founded on our perfection or our abilities, but on God’s faithfulness. Even in the covenant with Abraham, the focus was on God’s faithfulness rather than Abraham’s imperfect faith. Our faith may be imperfect. However, God still calls us to step forward in faith, trusting in God’s promises and faithfulness rather than our own.
Another topic that Pat highlighted was the idea of seeds. Pat mentioned that we can trace the theme of the Seed of God through all of God’s covenants with humanity.
So what seed has God planted in your heart? Another way to say this is to ask ourselves, what did God say? Pat shared a wonderful testimony at the end of her message about the importance of remembering God’s words, and always returning to what God has said to us when we face doubt or fear.
So what are the words that God has said to you and planted in your heart? Thank God that the fulfillment of his word is always based on God’s faithfulness and steadfastness. And that’s what we can put our hope in!
