The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

The disciples’ request, “Increase our faith,” came after Jesus taught them about forgiveness. He told them that if a brother sins against them and repents—even seven times in one day—they were to forgive each time. Realizing how difficult that kind of obedience would be, the apostles cried out, “Lord, increase our faith.” How often I have not wanted to have the faith to forgive when I am offended.
Jesus responded by teaching that faith is not measured by its size but by the One in whom it is placed. Even faith as small as a mustard seed can accomplish what seems impossible when it rests in God’s power. Increasing my faith requires taking the focus off myself and placing it on Abba Father. He honors those who trust Him and strengthens those who ask Him for more.
Whatever challenge you face today, don’t be afraid to pray the prayer of the apostles: “Lord, increase our faith.” He is faithful to grow our trust as we walk with Him, obey His Word, and depend on His grace.
