Unideal

Last week, I went camping with my family and some friends for a few days. I enjoyed most of it, but there was one day where it rained pretty heavily the whole day, which ruined our plans to go on a hike and check out the programs/activities in the park, so we spent the day at our friends’ yurt. I thought, “This is not ideal AT ALL.” However, I realized that ideals are our (often unrealistic) ideas of a “perfect…

Slow but Steady

I came across a podcast episode a few months ago titled “If you want to Succeed, Slow Down”. The theme of this was consistency, not just in not slacking off, but also in not overdoing things. It’s easy to go all out when starting/learning something new in the hopes of getting results fast, but it will quickly backfire when you can’t keep up with doing as much as possible every day to achieve your goal. It’s easier to stick to…

Fulfilling Your Calling

I’ve been thinking about fulfilling your calling for some time, and I’ve been seeing a lot of it in the life of David, who has one of the most drawn out examples of fulfilling calling in the Bible. David was called (well, anointed) to be king, but he doesn’t seem to fulfill his calling for a long time. David probably though he would be a shepherd his whole life until Samuel anointed him (1 Samuel 16), and right after that,…

Change and Growth

I used to hate change. However, over the last 10 months, I’ve gotten more reconciled to it, as starting my internship involved a myriad of changes happening to me. I become the youngest in the room, got put into a variety of leadership positions, and started writing devotions, to name a few of them. Change shakes up our comfort zone and reveals areas that we need to grow in. If we have no change, we become comfortable and can become…

Delegation

In previous LifeSpring events like the Kidz Harbour Christmas play, Volunteer Appreciation Barbecue, and others, I would usually play a central role in setup or at least running something. For the Wildfire Fundraiser, however, I didn’t want to take care of a table because I knew I’d also be supervising the kids in the gym that same afternoon. With that in mind, I spread out all the tasks that needed to be done on Sunday amongst Wildfire, and just did…

Talk Is Cheap

Every highschooler hears this question almost weekly; in fact, they probably know it by heart. The question and all its variations boil down to “What are you going to do after high school?” And for at least 50% of us (I’m making a wild guess here), the answer is “I dunno.” You might get a few speculations, but no one is completely sure of the area in which they will work or study. Some of us, myself included, have spent…

Let It Go

Earlier this week, some friends and I were leading worship. We had just hit that “sweet spot”, where everyone was just enjoying God’s presence, the music was quiet, and the atmosphere was tranquil and peaceful. Out of nowhere, my friend grabbed a small tambourine and started shaking it to the melody. I was irritated and thought “You are ruining this quiet, peaceful moment!” I was about to shush him when I realized (or rather, God gave me a mental nudge…

Learning By The Book

Last Friday at Wildfire, we had a different lesson plan for the night: instead of one of our leaders teaching us, we simply got out our Bibles, read through the passage from the lesson, and discussed it.  I really enjoyed that discussion. I didn’t know it was possible to squeeze so much out of 9 verses, but we thoroughly dissected and analyzed each part of the passage and came up with some pretty good takeaways. Our discussion was memorable because…

Rejoice Even When Things Don’t Seem to Work

I’ve been studying Habakkuk with my BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) class, and something that stood out was the ending of the book:  “Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines; though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; though the flock may be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls — Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God…

Doers vs Hearers

While I was listening to Auntie Leona’s message from this Sunday, the two things that caught my ear were “We need to use what we’ve learned” and “Are we just listening to sermons and doing discipleship but not growing?” I was reminded of James 1:22-25 – “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural…

Seek Awe

Let’s say you go on a trip to the Rockies. When you arrive, you’d probably be really excited about seeing it and taking lots of pictures. In contrast, the locals, who see the Rockies from their backyard, take almost no notice of it. It’s become so normal and familiar to them that it doesn’t deserve extra attention or recognition. Similarly, we often skip parts of the Bible that we’ve heard and read many times. I’ve definitely thought, “Oh, I’ve seen…

Clay

The Potter and the Clay is an analogy in the Bible about God and the relationship between Him and us. One instance of it is found in Romans 9:20-21, and says, “But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for…
