Recently, during the weekly Bible study I attend, one of the leaders said this, “A person pursues what their heart is set upon. If their heart is set upon the world—they will pursue the world. If their heart is set on God—they will pursue God.” And as I was hearing this, I felt convicted to ask, “Am I pursuing God?”
I realized that I wasn’t. I wasn’t walking away from God, but some time had passed since I was actively going after Him. And if I’m not pursuing God, then what am I pursuing?
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:33 (NIV)
There are a million things the world tells us to do and a million more that demand our attention. We can give so much of ourselves trying to meet the images of success that we see, but God wants us to look above and set our eyes and hearts on Him. When we fix our gaze on and seek more of Him first, God will provide everything we need to go forward.
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV)
And wherever your heart is, whatever it is set upon, it will seek. We don’t want to chase the world; we want to chase God, keeping our eyes on Him as we continue to grow and increase our faith. What is your heart set upon? How can you seek God this week?
