Increase Our Faith: Inadequacy

So you’ve spent some time with the Lord and what you sensed God calling you towards is something you have no skill or experience in. Like at all. Congratulations! You wouldn’t be the first.

Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”

Exodus 4:10

Moses was standing in front of a burning-not-burning-up bush, which God had spoken through to tell Moses to go back and bring the Israelites out of Egypt. God had just told Moses everything that He would do and had shown him signs and wonders to prove that what he was seeing was God. Moses’s response?

Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.

Exodus 4:13

It wasn’t that Moses didn’t believe that it was the Lord speaking, but Moses doubted that he was the one who could do it. Despite Moses’s doubt, God gave him everything he needed to succeed; God gave Moses authority to do signs so that the Israelites would know that the Lord had sent him, He sent Aaron to speak in Moses’s place, and moved the hearts of the elders of the Israelites so that they believed what Moses and Aaron said.

You might feel as Moses did, inadequate for the job God is pointing you towards. Regardless, feeling inadequate shouldn’t be the reason you say no. When God calls you to something, He has already made a way for you to it.

It’s scary when you can’t lean on your own ability to succeed, but that means that you have to trust and have faith in God. Don’t focus on what you can’t do, but what God can do. Wherever God is calling you to, you might not know why or how, He will do it. No matter how you feel, what matters is that God spoke to you and chose you for a reason and His grace is sufficient for all.
