Have you ever wondered how great songs are made? One of the things I’ve noticed with music is that great music seems to capture the raw emotions of the writer and stimulate them in others.
In a book I’ve been reading, the author shared a conversation he had with a worship song writer Cody Carnes. You might know him as the guy on “The Blessings Song” from 2020, or perhaps you may know his song, “Nothing Else”, one of my favorite worship songs. He wrote a song called “Firm Foundation” that we often sing at LifeSpring. In the conversation that was had, he mentioned that he wrote that song after having his first and worst panic attack. It was in his darkest moments that he was only able to muster up the words “He won’t, He won’t, He won’t fail, He won’t fail.” He felt like God had told him to “sing his way out of this.”
Andrea reminded us, on Sunday, that worship can be used in spiritual warfare to help break us out of darkness. Cody Carnes used worship to break through what He was going through.
Abby also spoke about this concept in her devotional (Sacrifice Of Praise), when you offer God a sacrifice of praise regardless of what you think and feel because of Who He is – Lord.
In 2024, we learned that one of the ways to patiently endure or have patient endurance is to Praise & Worship God. This is the act of giving God glory and intentionally turning our focus towards Jesus.
What caught my attention about the creation of the song Firm foundations was that it came out of rocky ground. It was when Cody Carnes experienced a breaking point in his life that God broke through with a breakthrough. It helped me shift my thinking in how to interpret difficult and challenging situations.
Sometimes God needs to break us in order to get the breakthrough we need for the next season. Sometimes God needs to break us in order to recreate us anew. Sometimes God needs to break off things from us that are holding us back from experiencing His fullness in our lives.
Father, I ask that you would transform and renew our minds. May we lift up our praise and worship to you when life tries to make us doubt who God is and what He can do. Show us how to lean into the breaking seasons of life knowing that you are doing a good work in us. Continue to build in us a firm foundation that is built on your son Jesus. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!
