Easter is a holy season for the Christian faith, but the reality is most of us do not really know why. The first thing my children asked when preparing for church was, “Will there be an Easter egg hunt?” Just like children, we can sometimes focus on everything that is happening around us and forget the real power and reason of Resurrection Sunday.
Most of us know that Jesus died for our sins, but we are unsure of why it was so important. We spent Sunday Celebration learning about why Easter was necessary, why the blood of Jesus was the only way. For an in depth look, please find the message here.
When Justus was 4 years old, he had a blood disease called Kawasaki disease. It was a disease that caused the blood vessels to be inflamed and if left untreated could cause major issues. The treatment for this disease was a blood transfusion, but not just ANY blood. He needed uncontaminated blood that contained the correct antibodies. Once he received that blood, he started to recover and the blood started to heal him from the inside out.
I was so impressed with the blood transfusion I was inspired to donate my own blood. However, after finding out I had high blood sugar, they rejected my blood! Only untainted blood could help. This is the problem we have with sin. The day Adam sinned is the day that mankind’s blood became tainted.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23
The price for sin was death, it was blood that would pay for sin. All throughout the Old Testament we can see that the Israelites offer animal sacrifices and it was the blood of the animals that covered sin for the time being. But this blood was only temporary, it was only a short term solution.
No animal blood, no human blood, no blood on earth was untainted. No blood could heal sin, UNTIL (!) The virgin birth of Jesus Christ.
A man born without sin and a life without sin – it was His blood that was untainted, worthy, holy, uncontaminated by sin blood that was able to heal human kind’s Kawasaki disease – sin. It was only this blood that could rid us of the disease of sin. It is only Jesus’ blood that can set us free.
Easter is about the death and resurrection of Jesus. But in between the death and resurrection was a blood that paid the price for our sins. Easter is not about egg hunts, Easter is about Jesus giving up His blood, to cleanse our own.
